Robert Wypasek (b. 1999) is a Polish tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer currently based at FHNW Musik – Jazzcampus Basel. He graduated with distinction from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice.
His musical language merges contemporary jazz, modern classical influences and a distinctly European sensibility. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, visual arts, theatre, film and elements of nature, he creates soundscapes marked by dark colours, emotional depth and spacious, carefully sculpted textures. His music resists easy categorisation — intimate, focused, yet unpredictable and charged with intensity.
Robert is a three-time Fryderyk Award nominee in the category Jazz Debut of the Year (2020, 2022, 2024), recognised for recordings with Paweł Mańka Semiotic Quintet, Andrzej Kowalski Quartet, Superminimalism and Horntet. He is a laureate of major jazz competitions, including B’Jazz Burghausen, Jazz Juniors, Jazz nad Odrą and Lotos Jazz Festival – Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa.
He has performed at international festivals such as Toronto Jazz FestivalNisville Jazz Festival, Jazz ve městě, Polska Jazz Festival in Hungary, Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, Jazz in the Ruins, Golden Washboard Festival, Tarnów Jazz Contest and many more.
Wypasek has collaborated with leading figures of the Polish and European jazz scene, including Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Dominik Wania, Maciej Obara, Tomasz Dąbrowski, Max Mucha, Grzegorz Pałka, as well as Joakim Milder and Per Zanussi. He is a member of the Polish Radio Jazz Studio Orchestra and in 2024 performed with Orchestre des Jeunes in collaboration with the French National Jazz Orchestra ONJ.
His studies in Basel allowed him to work with artists such as Pablo Held Trio, Jason Palmer, Nicole McCabe, Philip Dizack, and within the Amsterdam Basel Creative Collective with Lionel Loueke, Tineke Postma and Jim McNeely.
